Completed in 1998 and opened by Dr Caroline Jackson, MEP, this 2,100m² facility at Lower Compton, near Calne is the first destination for all the recyclable materials collected from Household Recycling Centres, kerbside collection rounds and mini bring sites in Wiltshire.
The MRF comprises reception areas, conveyor belts, manual and automatic sorting lines, flattening, spiking and baling equipment – all of which combine to create a facility which is capable of handling 23,000 tonnes of material per annum. Segregated materials including paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and cans are bulked up and transferred to reprocessors who finally prepare the materials for manufacturing into new recycled products.
